About CKCS United

Our Mission

At CKCS United, our mission is to serve as a dedicated center for purebred non-standard colored Cavaliers. We welcome membership from breeders and owners of chocolate and black Cavaliers, provided they are 100% Cavalier. Our goal is to keep our members informed about developments and changes in the world of alternate colored Cavaliers, fostering a community that celebrates and supports the diversity within the breed.

Our History

CKCS United is a dedicated community of breeders and owners of non-standard colored Cavaliers, with roots tracing back to the 1990s. Our collective experience and passion for these unique Cavaliers led us to recognize the need for a dedicated organization where members can discuss, support, and learn more about alternate colors within the breed. In response to the growing frustration among owners and breeders who lacked a home base for these discussions, we established CKCS United as a center of excellence and support for chocolate and black Cavaliers, fostering a welcoming and knowledgeable environment for all enthusiasts.

Our Programs

CKCS United offers a comprehensive range of programs to support breeders and owners of non-standard colored Cavaliers. Our services include registration support to help navigate the registration process, genetic support to ensure the health and purity of the breed, and breeder connections to foster a network of responsible breeders. We also provide event coordination to facilitate participation in various activities, publish informative articles to keep our community informed, and promote community development to strengthen the bonds among our members. Additionally, we are dedicated to color preservation and restoration, ensuring the longevity and recognition of chocolate and black Cavaliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at ckcsunited@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

CKCS United is an organization dedicated to the health and well-being of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Our mission revolves around several key principles:

1. **Promoting Genetic Diversity**: We advocate for the inclusion of historically significant colors such as chocolate and solid black in the breed standard. By broadening the acceptable color range, we aim to enhance the genetic diversity of Cavaliers, which is essential for reducing the prevalence of hereditary health issues.

2. **Prioritizing Health Over Color**: At CKCS United, we believe that the health of Cavaliers should always take precedence over color standards. We educate breeders, owners, and the public about the importance of health screenings, genetic testing, and responsible breeding practices to ensure the well-being of the breed.

3. **Advocacy and Education**: We work to raise awareness about the risks associated with a narrow gene pool and the benefits of embracing a wider range of colors. Through educational initiatives, we provide valuable information and resources to support informed breeding decisions.

4. **Collaboration with Experts**: We collaborate with geneticists, veterinarians, and other professionals who have extensive knowledge and experience in canine health and genetics. By working together, we aim to promote best practices and advancements in the health of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

5. **Community Engagement**: CKCS United is committed to fostering a supportive and informed community of Cavalier enthusiasts. We encourage open dialogue, respect for long-standing breeders, and a collective effort to improve the breed's future.

Our tagline, "Beyond Standards," reflects our commitment to looking past superficial breed  color standards and focusing on the deeper aspects of genetic health and diversity. Through our efforts, we strive to ensure a healthier, happier future for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

CKCS United organizes a variety of events aimed at promoting the health, well-being, and genetic diversity of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Our events are designed to educate, engage, and bring together the Cavalier community. Here are some of the key types of events we organize:

  1. Educational Seminars and Workshops: These events feature expert speakers, including veterinarians, geneticists, and experienced breeders, who provide valuable insights into topics such as genetic diversity, health screenings, responsible breeding practices, and the history of Cavalier colors.
  2. Health Clinics: We organize health clinics where Cavaliers can receive comprehensive health screenings, including heart, eye, and genetic tests. These clinics help owners ensure the well-being of their dogs and make informed breeding decisions.
  3. Breed Shows and Competitions: While promoting genetic diversity, we also celebrate the beauty and skills of Cavaliers. Our breed shows and competitions are inclusive of various colors and focus on overall health and conformation.
  4. Community Meetups and Socials: These informal gatherings provide an opportunity for Cavalier owners and enthusiasts to connect, share experiences, and build a supportive community. Social events may include fun activities like agility courses, obedience trials, and playful meet-and-greets for the dogs.
  5. Advocacy Campaigns: We organize events aimed at raising awareness and advocating for changes in breed standards to include historically significant colors such as chocolate and black. These campaigns often involve public outreach, media engagement, and collaboration with other organizations.
  6. Fundraising Events: To support our initiatives, CKCS United hosts fundraising events such as charity auctions, raffles, and donation drives. The funds raised help us provide resources for research, health clinics, and educational programs.
  7. Online Webinars and Virtual Events: To reach a broader audience, we offer online webinars and virtual events. These sessions cover a wide range of topics relevant to Cavalier owners and breeders, providing access to valuable information regardless of location.
  8. Puppy Playdates and Socialization Events: Recognizing the importance of socialization for young Cavaliers, we organize puppy playdates where puppies can interact in a safe and controlled environment. These events also provide new owners with tips on raising well-adjusted dogs.

By participating in CKCS United events, members can stay informed about the latest developments in Cavalier health and breeding, connect with like-minded individuals, and contribute to the ongoing efforts to promote the well-being of this beloved breed.

No, CKCS United does not accept Merle Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. There is no historical evidence to support the presence of the Merle color pattern within the breed. It is our opinion that Merle Cavaliers are likely the result of crossbreeding with other breeds that carry the Merle gene. As such, we do not recognize Merles as part of the legitimate color spectrum for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Additionally, Merle coloring can pose significant health risks when bred improperly. The Merle gene can lead to various genetic health issues, such as hearing and vision problems, which can compromise the well-being of the dogs. Accepting Merle Cavaliers conflicts with our commitment to promoting the health and genetic integrity of the breed.

Our mission at CKCS United is to promote the health and genetic diversity of Cavaliers while staying true to the breed's historical and genetic heritage. Accepting colors that have no historical basis within the breed would contradict these principles. We remain committed to recognizing and advocating for historically significant colors such as chocolate and solid black, which have documented roots in the breed's foundation.
